Observation details

A Yukon first. Cameron's field notes; "Eared Grebe - breeding plumage. General shape like HOGR but slightly smaller; small round body (sort of oblong) - no obvious tail, medium-long neck, about like Horned Grebe; head shape distinctly different than Horned Grebe, it was much more triangular with a distinct point on top, also, lack the "horns" of a Horned Grebe; head, neck, back, and upper breast black; sides rusty red; belly whitish; face showed a fan of yellowish feathers emanating from base of bill out across face; the fan of yellowish feathers on face went only slightly above the eye, but well below the eye to cover much of the side of face; bill black; bill shape very different from Horned Grebe, its bill was smaller and pointier than that of HOGR." The Eared Grebe was seen again on 25 May and 30 May. Additional features noted on 25 May, "lobbed toes on greenish feet; intense red eye; blackish on upper breast becoming mottled with white towards undersides; very pointed head shape; straight bill, short and pointed, not drooped down like Horned Grebe." Field sketch made.
