Observation details
This bird looks like it might be a male prairie Merlin. The photos were taken at dusk, on an overcast evening, when the lighting was poor. I can see bold tails bands. The tips of the wings look black. The topside of the bird is bluish, while the underside is pale with faint rufous streaking. In one of the photos, I can see yellow leggings. At first, I thought the Merlin caught a bird, but after studying the photos more closely, it appears to be a Brazilian free tailed bat. The Merlin pecked at it a few times. It didn't seem like it was enjoying the bat, after several minutes, the Merlin let it go, and it dropped to the ground.
