The male is retracting his crest now, after having received a seed from the female.

Observation details

Three of these delightful little quail showed up directly outside our patio door at Savegre Hotel. We observed them for at least 10 minutes. What I assume is the male periodically raised its little crest, very slowly, like it was breathing. It would slowly extend, and then slowly retract. The female (I assume) would immediately come running up and put a seed in his mouth when she saw this. They repeated this behavior many times. They seemed to be a male and a female, and the third bird was perhaps a juvenile, although all looked similar. It did seem like it was just the one dominant bird that would raise his crest though.
