Observation details
Received phone call from B. Allen that there were 9 birds on the beach, in spite of the crowd. We located them north of the main beach area. As beach walkers approached, the tightly-knit group of birds would lift off, fly low over the water and then return to the same spot after a minute or two. We took many photos of the birds on the beach and in flight. Field marks: large shorebird, with white & black plumage on back, white below, head and neck a rusty or coral color (some variation between the 9 birds), long blue/ gray legs, thin, upturned dark bill, broad wings evident in flight. A spectacular group of birds!
