Observation details
Two or three were reported from Tobishima during Golden Week. This is a rare but annual spring migrant to islands in the Sea of Japan such as Hegura-jima where small flocks of up to five birds have been reported (Brazil 1991). Two to three were foraging in the grass field surrounding the heliport at the north end of Tobishima throughout our stay. On May 7, we found three more in the agricultural fields at the south end of the island and tallied our high count of five. Note the long primary projection extending beyond tertials. This is a key feature, apparently, separating the Syke's Short-toed Lark from the eastern most race (longipennis) of the Greater Short-toed Lark (C. brachydactyla).
