NOTES: Natural song by unidentified bird high in burnt tree; badly seen from rear against bright sun; beak "sparrowy / finch-like"; upperparts dark or black, apparently with white patch on shoulder; what could be seen of underparts was white. There was considerable discussion later as to the ID of this recording; suggestions were Green-tailed Towhee, Lazuli Bunting and Yellow-rumped Warbler. I have compared sonograms of this recording with sonograms of recordings of Green-tailed Towhee and Yellow-rumped Warbler made by me at the workshop and with recordings of all three species in Bird Songs of the Pacific States. The sonogram of the recording of Lazuli Bunting in BSPS is strikingly similar to this recording. All the recordings of Green-tailed Towhee and Yellow-rumped Warbler are clearly different. Habitat: Grassland.
