Observation details
Continuing bird found by Dan Cooper. Dark scoter with mostly uniform dark head with only faint pale patch on face in front of eye. No dark cap (as in Surf Scoter) or pale cheek (as in Black Scoter). Long bill, thinner at the tip and less blocky than Surf Scoter, and feathered almost to the nostril. White patch on secondaries was shown very briefly, but was almost always obscured, even when diving. Pale belly shown when bird tilted to one side to preen. Probably immature male based on pale belly, lack of strong white patches on head. Some white just under eye, maybe beginning of male white undereye arc? Very cooperative, in marina on Lindero Canyon Rd. Photos.
