Yorktown Log DAT #7 Ballard briefs capt Vic and CPO swarm on ATC search plan 5/4 tues. (visual search for debris field is perpendicular to the current that distributed the debris.) 04 43 this is the two positions on where H sank, so averaged it and if that doesn't work, you add more lines ...that's a day, a day's work 505 BB 735 This is the repetitive smudge - this is the guy we've got hit 3x. SQ we think that's the Yorktown? That's the only guy we've got, it's consistent, nothing else going on around it. SQ? further south? Y drifted for 17hrs in half knot current, so we think the current pulled it this way 820 we know the H sank like a stone the moment it was hit, and at the time H hit, it was surrounded by DDs, up against Yorktown, destroyer screen. All in the area, not steaming, not a lot of course changes, sitting with a drifting ship, running around it, so pretty good fixes. So here are all the fixes from these dds 858 so you got 4 indy sources of data, and all say the same things so, it walks like a duck, it talks like a duck, I think it's a duck. 0915 so our highest probability for sinking of H is -same scale-yup -1001 so, here the DDs all around, and the H breaks it back, sinks in 2 pieces immediately, salt shaking, that's the current they're reporting ... these 2 guys reporting it in opposite directions, always fun ...guessing its about 225, he says 1/2, he says 1/4 he says a half, so anything that came off this guy went that way. If you compare debris trail, all around a mile plus, you have to intersect that. 1308 so that's why, maybe maybe maybe. when you get that many ships saying the same thing, so gotta believe its good dta. and they're multiple fixes, Gwynn, Hughes balsch. 1339 1429 I'm goin' after the Hammond cause it is the one I have the strongest, it sank so fast surrounded by these ships, while the Y drifted thru the night 17 hrs and then sank, no fixes, cause they were chasing submarines, so lost nice nestle of guys, so let's peg the H and know the Y is south south west of that.1502 our best knowledge base is H BB 1700 It's a little itty bitty bip, now that turns out to be the signature this guy was supposed to see, this is what the Yorktown is supposed to look like SQ- it's the right size BB that's what it's supposed to look like and there's not another one anywhere in here. 1728 BB when we go down we'll also know if this guy (MR1) can see these things. 3019 but you can talk yourself into about anything (laffs) 3024 (SUNSET? MR1 recovery) 3110 back deck ambi good at 3135 to 3350 4310 winch 4508 5100 winch, ater lapping, boat still, pretty good ambi 5225 10137 Good wave crashes over, another, great winch in bkgnd 10220 10254 GREAT WINCH 10317 gain down 10638 (winch ends there drippy water ambi).
