Observation details
I rarely see these birds out of their boxes in full daylight, but this one flushed from the hole where he was enjoying the late afternoon sun when I let my dog out on his leash and the dog rooted around at the base of the box's mounting post. After the photo session, the bird chose to return to the box when it got mobbed by a scrub-jay. Sexed by brown color to darkest feathers (females' darkest feathers are black) and choice of nest box (he takes box "B", which I specifically installed for him to lessen how much he gets mobbed, whereas his bride always takes box "A").
