Observation details
This is my first effort to distinguish Allen's from Rufous hummingbirds based on the tail feathers. I think this photo might be good enough to show the shape of the key tail feather, Rectrix #2 (second one out from the center, or the fourth one in from the outside--the first one without a white tip). R2 is notched in this tail shot--key feature for distinguishing Rufous from Allen's. Thanks to Don Roberson for pointing this out.
