Observation details
One individual, adult male, similar in size to Anna’s Hummingbirds (though not seen side-by-side), long downcurved bill, basal portion of bill reddish, distal portion black, base of bill wide and flattened when seen from below, crown and upperparts greenish, auriculars blackish when seen from the side, eye dark, thin white line extending back and curving down behind eye, tail blackish from above, throat iridescent blue with a couple of minute white flecks in the center, breast iridescent green, wings a step shorter than tail when perched, when perched it would pump its tail up and down rapidly, it seemed to dominate the Anna’s Hummingbirds which it chased off a few times, it gave a strong ratchet-like call somewhat similar to a Ruby-crowned Kinglet but stronger, call is quite distinctive, first time I have seen this species in the United States. Karen Palmer first saw this bird on 11/13/03 but thought that it had been present for about three weeks prior to this since that is how long she had been hearing its call.
