Observation details
I spotted this bird at the back ponds near the end of my visit. I studied this bird for a short time, took a few photos, and continued on my way. This was a large plover with what seemed to be a larger head than a sandpiper, but also a short neck and bill, and medium-length wings and legs. The body was quite plump and full-chested and the wings were not as long or slim as they are on a golden-plover. I also thought the bill was quite stout. The crown, upperparts, and wings were a light gray with dark mottling and without any of the brown or golden tones that I would expect on a golden plover. The face was clouded darker and the center of the lower breast and belly were blackish, but this bird was still in transition from basic to alternate plumage, so the dark regions below were less extensive and not as black as I would expect from an adult in alternate plumage. The bill appeared to be black and the eyes and legs seemed to be dark.
