Observation details
I think it was Andrew who first spotted this bird in the trees of the "Piney Knoll" while we were waiting for the Hooded Warbler to appear. we then watched this bird as it moved about quietly in the mid-levels of the trees overhead. This bird did approach in response to playback, but not all that aggressively and it never vocalized. After a few minutes overhead, this bird flew off to the east toward the hotel and to my knowledge it was never seen again. This bird was present for only a few minutes and given that it was always some distance overhead and that I tried to get some photos I must admit that my views were sufficient to note the general size, structure, and plumage patterns but I missed many of the finer details. My impression was that this bird was a little larger and heavier-bodied than a warbler, but it also had a stouter bill and what seemed to be a shorter tail. I never could determine the finer details of the length or shape of the bill or tail, and I never saw the primary projection or wingtips. My overall impression was that this bird was similar in size and shape to a Solitary-type Vireo. Quite evident on this bird was that the head and upperparts were green, but the wings were dark with two pale wingbars that appeared to extend straight across the tips of the greater and median coverts. Because I saw this bird primarily in the shade I was unable to determine the precise color of the wings or if there were pale fringes on the remiges. I thought I detected some indication of the pale spectacles, but even a short time after we saw this bird I could not be sure about the face pattern. I was more clear that the throat, breast, and sides were lemon-yellow, and that the belly, flanks, and undertail coverts were white. I also thought the underside of the tail was relatively uniformly dark without the tail-spots typical of most warblers that have similar plumage patterns. I thought the bill was dark, but I failed to note anything more of the soft-part colors.
