Observation details
*MEGA | Found earlier this morning by Steve Arena. Apparently a female Ruff (Reeve). It associated with other shorebirds, mostly the dowitchers, but fed on the mud flats while the dowitchers fed in the water. If not with dow, then it was often alone. Great, long views. Particularly enjoyed observing the flexibility of the tertials of this bird in order to help with ID. Whenever there was a breeze they would curve and blow with the wind. The bird was clearly more reddish than the yellow legs, wallets, etc., and somewhat similar in color to the dows. Bill was shorter than dow, and visibly less pointed than the yellowlegs'. Took a bunch of pics as seen below, and also a video. Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) from Gaetan Dupont on Vimeo.
