Observation details
It was a moderate hike about 1 km from the roadside into the dunes before dawn to be ready at location for these birds at first light. The birds signalled their arrival with very obvious calls while in flight. The parrots swooped down fast and settled on low trees in dry scant woodland where the flock foraged for a very short period and afforded our group of observers, with satisfactory views .. The birds did not forage for very long during which time they became silent. It was remarkable how these birds disappeared into the trees and were not seen again. The location was within a restricted zone but thankfully we were able to arrange access and a guided walk with one one of the knowledgeable station rangers . This was one of the most exciting birding events I ever experienced. Thank you to Newhaven and the rangers for making this adventure possible.
