Adult, alternate plumage; tiny size, black head, small, delicate, dark bill, white underparts and gray back. About 2/3 size of Bonaparte's Gulls and only slightly larger than 2 COTE nearby. Underwing entirely charcoal, very conspicuous in flight. When swimming, primary tips with more white than BOGU. in flight upper wing all light gray except white border of primaries and secondaries (no black); wing more rounded than BOGU. Fairly easily located among the many BOGU by its foraging habit of swimming like phalarope and picking repeatedly at water surface.
