Observation details
Nondescript brown duck in poor lighting could have been easily overlooked or dismissed as probable female mallard. Upon closer inspection, we saw it was an eider. Distinguished from female common eider by rounder head, feathering does not come near all the way to the nostrils, and feather markings along sides and scapulars are V shaped. First documented record for Kenai Flats and first for Soldotna Christmas Bird Count. (After snow squall passed, a shaft of sunlight broke through for a while and I was able to get these photos.)
