Red-naped X Red-breasted Sapsucker
Observation details
It has a typical white sapsucker wing patch and white patches on the back. The cap is red, but not the whole head with some red on the nape. The chin is red with a black bib like Red-naped. All around the eye is black with no white eye stripe, but there is the faintest of white behind the eye to the back of the head. A white stripe does extend from the front of the head (lores) towards the back but instead of curving around and going down to the breast, it ends in a roundish white spot on the side of the head below and behind the eye. The breast does have some yellow all over like an adult Red-breasted northern sapsucker. It is attracted by a Red-breasted recording and gets quite close. Photographs were later verified by Steve Shunk to be of a Red-naped X Red-breasted Hybrid.
