Observation details
This species is very rare on campus. Confirmed identification from the photo, taken of the bird when very distant. The light rusty patches on the primaries, and the black wing tips, wing shape, etc. are typical of this species. Had a long-tailed, short winged aspect in life, but not so much as an Accipiter. The bird was flying over the Río Yeguare, very high and rising for a while on thermals before flying off to the north. Evidently just passing through.
