Observation details
Bird observed for 4-5 minutes feeding among honeysuckle and lantana flowers and photographed (attached). ID Confirmed by three Ebird reviewers and a Arizona State University School of Life Sciences Professor: Bird was distinctly yellow and had a pointed pointed oriole beak that was thick-based and fairly straight. Tail appeared to be square-tipped, and photos revealed faint streaks on the back and extensive white in the wings. Not a Hooded Oriole which would have a longer and more curved bill, and a longer, graduated tail. An immature Orchard Oriole would have a thinner bill and not as much white in the wing. Ebird reviewers indicated that this is only the 4th record for Maricopa County and the first in almost a decade.
