Observation details
Large bird. Clearly much larger than Northern Shovelers and other larger ducks nearby. Large thick bill, dark angular head with extensive white showing on front of neck, throat, and breast and a little bit of a neck ring showing as it bounced among the waves. Dark back, with some white showing on the sides. I watched this bird for an estimated 30 minutes trying to get photographs. Differentiated from Red-throated Loon by size and lack of white on the face in this plumage, or a Yellow-billed (rare) or Pacific Loon (size).
