Observation details
This first winter bird was very active and playful during my visit. Aggressively chasing the larger Herring Gulls, carrying small pieces of driftwood around in its beak, bathing, preening. Of course it flushed with the flock multiple times, once landing out in the Gulf, but it soon returned to the large mixed flock on the beach. Looking similar to first winter HEGU but with warmer brown tones, including tertials, but smaller overall with shorter, thinner bill, rounder head. Cute bird! Thayer's do not lose their juvenile plumage until late winter so it looked uniformly feathered, not molting like the other gulls.
