Observation details
First of this species in the state for RPO and CRF. Foraging along dam, never straying more than 50 meters from the dam. Apparent HY-bird, with strong pale buff edging to feathers on back. Barely distinct chinstrap. Rounded head, with gray crown, forehead, nape which appeared relatively pale when the bird was in strong afternoon sunlight and much darker when bird was in shade. White throat, breast, separated from nape and crown by sharply demarcated edge; no jagged edges. No white around eye, but pale skin around eye (visible through scope). Bill with dark culmen, but relatively rounded towards tip; not sharply upturned, not heavy. No white visible on the flanks when it was sitting on water. Photo in eBird rarities group at Flickr:
