Observation details
This bird originally ID'd as Gray-headed Kite by our guide. However, further study of photos, although distant, foggy and poor, led us to think this might be much more uncommon Gray-bellied Hawk instead. eBird reviewer BW agrees and states "yes I would say its a gray belied hawk - note the contrast between cap and rest of hood plus a believe I see only one gray-band on the tail" Additionally, when zoomed in on my photo, I can see an orange-yellow eye, something that I see when comparing online images of this species vs the GHKI, which appears to have all dark eyes in online photos. I can not find an image of a GHKI with such a dark gray head or a dark/black cap, although this mark does fit GBHA.
