Observation details

Found by Bruce Barker this morning and later seen by Jerry Smith. This bird was quite confiding, intently foraging on some sort of fly (gnat?) that was on the water's surface. Walked rapidly, snapping at surface in a manner similar to a yellowlegs. Rare inland and late. This is at least the second record for the lake, one seen years ago about this time. There likely are other Penobscot Co. records, but I am unaware of them. Juvenile with several lower and a couple upper scapulars molted into gray first basic. A medium-large shorebird slightly larger than Greater Yellowlegs but apparently not as long-legged. Legs black; bill long and slightly upturned with pink basal half and black tip. Head and neck grayish brown down to breast and with whitish brow to eye. Abdomen whitish. Back and wing coverts brownish with pale and dark shaft streaks; tertials marbled at tips. Primaries black with white tips. In flight, underwing linings black and short white bar ran across base of inner primaries and outer secondaries. Rump white, tail black.
