Observation details
Medium size owl with yellow eyes, flying low over the open coastal marsh just southeast of the fort. Then sitting on the ground for several minutes. Heavily streaked breast, nearly white chest & belly. Pale underwing with comma shaped mark near the wrist. Just before seeing this owl, I was observing a northern harrier hunting over the same marsh area. Until I got home and looked at the photos in detail, I assumed it was a young horned owl (mainly from the yellow eyes & ear tufts), but was surprised to see it hunting in that area, during the day, and sitting on the ground. The time was 16:08, sunny, clear day, ~74 deg. Please note the order of the photos...in flight ones came first. I am NOT a highly experienced birder, so am quite anxious to know if I got this correct. Note: Four of these photos have been posted to eBird Rarity Photos on Flickr.
