Observation details
***Very rare. Likely first refuge record, my first in Seneca County, and early. Eclipse male in huge Aythya flock on Main pool. Almost overlooked as a Ring-necked (scarce today so black back stood out). Tuft visible even when sleeping, then more obvious when awake. Dusky gray sides and black back, black head and half length shaggy tuft. Bold and complete white wing stripe seen well when flapping, very distinctive from ring-necked pattern. Lost when it started swimming South in flock and not relocated, but undoubtedly still present. Viewed from about half way along first stretch of drive, near back of main group.
