Frosty, pale coloration with white-edged scrimshaw patterning
Observation details
Perched on rocks with many herring gulls; overall frosty pale coloration conspicuous compared to the darker brown tones of the first year herring gulls; primaries slightly darker than overall color but prominently edged in stark white; dark bill more delicate than herring; more rounded head. In flight(to ridge of dump), pale gray brown tail contrasted with lighter dorsum; secondaries same color as tail, forming a secondary bar; white terminal bands and blotches formed scrimshaw pattern on scapulars, wing coverts and greater coverts ; tertials paler than primaries with darker sub-terminal bars with white feather edging.
