NOTES: "Bird was vocalizing from gutter of apartment building [adjacent to national wildlife refuge]..." [This is the Primary Song of the species (sensu BNA) combining the fully peaked form of the Initially Peaked Vocalization (IPV) with type 1 and type 2 Regularly Repeated Vocalizations (RR1s, RR2s). See Figure 1c of Smith (1970a. Song-like displays in Sayornis species. Behaviour 37:64-84) for RRVs and Figure 1 of Smith (1970b. Displays and message assortment in Sayornis species. Behaviour 37: 85-112) for IPVs. Note that the BNA account appears to have confused the IPVs with RR1s and the RR1s with RR2s. Somewhat atypical of the species (fide BNA following Smith), these vocalizations are not strongly biased towards IPVs, with nearly one-third of the songs representing RRVs (62 of 174 vocalizations). In the latter part of the recording (2:30-4:12), the bird alternates between the two at a roughly 2:1 ratio of IPV to RRV. There appear to be 22 RR1s (0:08, 0:30, 0:58...) and 40 RR2 (0:06, 0:14, 0:20...), but it is difficult to be certain due to the songs of other birds. Quality changed from 1-2 to 2-3, 2-1 (Carpodacus mexicanus singing throughout the first half of thie recording makes the songs of Sayornis almost unrecognizeable - BEST after 2:30) - 5 April 2005].
