Observation details

Sadly, bird run over on road. By the time I noticed it crouched immediately before the gravel section of twisty Topaz Rd, there wasn’t time to slam on the brakes (even at 60 km/hr). I went back for the corpse and brought it home to photograph. The iris appeared blackish, not red. The habitat was roadside patches of tall grass between the rain forest and pasture. It would be interesting to know whether a breeding population exists at this locality or the bird had arrived from drought-stricken ranges to the west. There was also a large fire near Irvingbank late last week, thou we haven’t seen an influx of other dry country birds.
