Photo 4: Baird’s in flight showing dark rump and weak wingstripe
Observation details
photo 1 (at bottom:) Relatively late continuing Bairds’s Sandpiper left - White-rumped Sandpiper right. Scissored wings well protruding beyond tail put these two juveniles in the long winged peep category. They are slightly smaller than close-by Sanderlings. Baird’s shows oval body section with broad and flat shoulder. Eye is more prominent/beady than in White-rumped, Baird’s bill appears slightly smaller and straighter. Baird’s back has uniform scalloped dark grey feathers with white edges while bright rusty edging is visible on several feather groups of White-rumped. photo 2: Baird’s Sandpiper in front of White-rumped Sandpiper keeps body horizontal while feeding vs. White-rumped that inclines body downward (not shown on photo.) Also note Baird’s larger eye and buffy breastband vs. stripes on flanks of White-rumped. Photo 3: Baird’s Sandpipers oval shape, large eye, scissored wingtips, buffy breastbad. Photo 4: Baird’s in flight showing dark rump and weak wingstripe Photo 5: White-rumped Sandpiper in the back shows larger head, heavier chest, more upright posture, heavier bill, rusty edging on back while Baird’s Sandpiper in front shows flatter but buffier chest and more horizontal posture.
