Observation details
This is to report an occurrence of a Flammulated Owl found injured in Solano County and recovered by a resident and turned into the Suisun Wildlife Center. Unfortunately the owl died the following day. Since this species has not been reported before in Solano County, I felt it noteworthy to alert others that these may be occurring. The owl was found in the resident's back yard on the ground. After getting instructions from the Wildlife Center, he recovered it and brought it to Suisun. It was alert, but only 75%. Looked like head trauma, but no immediate signs of CNS damage. Also found that its shoulder was bruised, indicating collision with something, possibly a car. Was given food/water and kept warm over night. It was awake the next AM early, but died around 10:30. Internal injuries. Notes on the location: the bird was found in northern Fairfield (furthest development north) on the north (mountain) side of the freeway. It could have flown down from the Blue Ridge area, but they've never been reported there as well. There's a gulf course and riparian area nearby across the freeway. Very disappointed in losing this bird since we were hoping to get it back into the local populations.
