Observation details
Not seen in Chaparral Park proper, but at base of scrubby hillside behind park, which is easily accessible by trail from park. GPS: 33.63575,-117.81204. Juvenile bird was between chipping sparrow and white crowned sparrow in size. Conspicuous gray crown and nape with striking white superciliary stripe, which was yellowish or cream in color anterior to the eye. Bill greyish. Vague streaking on upper breast. Hint of black patch in middle of upper breast, on R side, and slight black patch just below bill, on right side. Gray cheek contrasted sharply with white throat. Warm brown on back and wing coverts. Longish tail was dark but showed white flashes in flight. Bird fed on ground and low down in sage at edge of clearing. Fairly tame. Lots of photos. Bird flew to small copse of live oak trees 30m E and down hillside at end of observation period.
