Media notes
confusing bird, initially thought this was a juvenile white-winged Tern, then after seeing photo recorded as Whiskered Tern because of bill size and large black nape, but clear dark carpal bar and saddle make me change again to Black-winged. I also noticed that all juvenile Whiskered Terns had black legs, and this one more reddish legs, but not sure if this is an exclusive characteristic for White-winged juveniles. Need to do some more research on this. And changed it back again after some research. Bill and structure of head makes me think this is a Whiskered, but still not completely confident that I’m always able to make the right call on these juveniles.
Observation details
56 at roost, at least 460 at pier, spent some time to look at the different molting stages of adult and juvenile birds on the poles. There were only 2 birds out of 180 with still a largely red bill and 6 juveniles.
