Observation details
This juvenile bird was seen with juvenile and adult Long-billed Dowitchers and was quite similar in overall size and structure. Its bill seemed shorter than that of a typical Long-billed, but the key factors in identifying this bird as a Short-billed Dowitcher were the rust-colored internal markings on the tertials and greater wing coverts. Its upperparts were also very bright, particulary the back and scapulars, which showed much rust color internally as well as on the feather edges. Photographs.
