Observation details
Heard the "Peough!" call first, then spotted them in the same area as a group of Red-headed Woodpeckers (near the first right turn of the trail). The first was difficult to identify against the bright morning skies, but when it took off, the white flash on its back was clearly visible, and moments later also the yellow underside of its wings as the sun shone through the feathers. It flew to a snag where another (silent) flicker was already perched on top. When an adult Red-headed Woodpecker followed into the same tree, the two flickers silently took off and flew further into the woods (in a north-easterly heading).
