NOTES: HHb filters in cut position; attenuators off on both recorder and microphone; ONLY ONE, odd call IMMEDIATELY after start of recording; recorded after playback by Mario Cohn-Haft of a tape Bret Whitney recorded of Malacoptila fusca; although birds were seen in this same spot by Field Guides tour groups, both the previous year and in February 1998, we managed to get the bird by "fishing"; it was not vocalizing, nor was it seen, before using playback; in response to playback, the bird approached and perched in a number of trees around us; it gave several different vocalizations, all rather soft and most almost immediately after playback; bird was well seen; when recorded, the bird was about 18 meters away and 8 meters up in trees along a small, mostly dry streambed; the bird was generally silent, but gave in addition to this vocalization, a long, buzzy trill that was reminiscent of Platyrinchus coronatus, but without the rise at the end (only descending); bird generally used perches 5-10 meters up; known territory along the Principal Trail just off the grid at what would be Trail U, had one existed; calm; NOTE: left channel drops out. Sound stimulation was (other): playback of M. fusca song. Response to playback: Approach. Response to playback: Normal song. Response to playback: Different song. Other Behaviors: Advertise, Scold. Habitat: Rainforest, Evergreen Forest, Creek.
