Silhouette of birds diagnostic for parakeets.
Observation details
Heard a flock of parrots or parakeets making a racket off to the south of the park. Managed to get out into an open area before they flew over going from south to north over the Island area. Seen about 150 feet up - just high enough to clear the tallest trees. Calls were harsh and uneven, almost hoarse sounding chee, eaaah and aaah calls, and very unlike the monotone kaak calls of amazona parrots. All green bodied with no wingbars or other markings that I could see. Heavy, pale, parrot-like bill. Bold eye ring evident but owing to the harsh glare of the light and the gray cloud deck of the sky I was unable to make out the extent of red on the head. Noticeably long-tailed in flight with the tail feathers appearing staggered in length. Wing tips also pointed, not rounded. Wing beat motion somewhat stiff but deeper and more fluid than the flat, fluttery styles of amazonas. Though I didn't have sufficent time to observe all 7 birds in detail I feel it is very likely all were Mitred though I can't rule out Red-masked or similar parakeet species wasn't present. This is now the 3rd year in a row flocks of parakeets or parrots have appeared in the central HB area during the month of August. Feral parrots and parakeets are highly unusual to the area and rarely ever seen here in spite of their prominence in neighboring areas of LA county and inland areas of OC.
