Observation details
Small gull first caught my attention with my naked eye from a long distance by the way it dove into the water and I wondered if it might be a tern. I got my bins on it and could see the black head so I asked my husband to head the boat in that direction. It took off before we could get close but I was able to follow it in flight and saw where it landed again. This time we were able to get close enough to ID it and photograph it as an adult Bonaparte’s Gull with black head, dark bill, white eye arcs, dark trailing edge to wings with light gray back and reddish-orange legs and feet. A first for me for Great Pond and Kennebec County
