Observation details
in the middle of the river and south of White's Marina in New Hamburg, NY and north of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, a single bird, guesstimate of about 14", thought it was a gull at first, very pointy wings, short tailed, bright white undertail coverts, bump or protrusion at the end of the bill, tip of bill turns down like a hook, all black above, head all black, buffy-whitish on cheek and black back, no white on the back, flew fast with intermittent wingbeats, dove under the water from a sitting position, fast wingbeats, flew short distances when boat approached too closely, each time flew low to the water, observed 32 minutes from distances of 50 feet or less, photographed using an iPhone 5 with no attachments, report and photos submitted to NYSARC
