Media notes
Fresh dung near scratch area. The bird that flew away was headed in this direction, but I don't know if this was left by that bird.
Observation details
Walking the paths of the prairie at sunrise, a small game bird trotted along the path away from me. The body was roundish like a drooping grapefruit, with a short tail. After taking 5-6 steps, the bird flew away, low to the ground and over the edge of a the hill. The bird appeared to be female but was smaller and rounder than a female pheasant. I couldn't see the face. Will include a photo of a feather found near where it flew off, and a photo of fresh dung near a scratch area. Along the paths, in general, there were many 8 - 10" scratch areas with small feathers and nearby droppings. I suspect Bobwhites are nesting here.
