Observation details
A second bird joined the original on or about Friday, according to Mel, the owner at 17172 Lakeshore Rd. So, after FOUR years of calling, he has finally found a mate (assuming that this is the same bird sporadically seen in late May and June of 2015). The new bird doesn’t call as loudly or as often as the male. Today, both were present at the same time. I watched both birds calling independently at the same time; they were about 30 metres apart and both were in the open. I tried to get a photo of both together but I missed my one second chance when he landed on the wire beside the new one, which promptly flew to the south. I can’t say for sure whether the new dove is a female although Mel says that the male mounted the new bird yesterday. However, he’s tried that with mourning doves in the past, so we can’t be sure yet. He has tried to build nests on Mel’s car recently, something he abandoned the past two months. The next month could prove interesting. Or not. **Update.....I added Mel's photos of the two at the same time on his bench. Mel is the owner of the "pink" cottage, #17272. He and his wife Bonnie have been feeding the male for the past 3 years and they were the first to notice TWO birds on July 16th. These photos were taken by Mel that day.
