Observation details
Observed in the River Avon off Midland Bridge Road at the private Gainsborough Retirement Community, Irving Road, Eugene, OR. This chunky looking male bird was slightly smaller than the adjacent Mallards and roughly the same size as the numerous American Wigeons it was associating with. The first field mark I noticed on this very skittish bird was its very obvious long pointed black and gray/white down curved tertial feathers that laid loosely over the ducks short tail. The head pattern was striking and impossible to miss with the broad glossy green mane running down the side of the birds brownish head. We studied the bird for perhaps 45 minutes. Overall it was pale gray in colour with some fine black scaling on the upper back, sides and belly. Much heavier black scalloping was noted in the breast area. A distinct black bow tie like collar separated the white throat from the upper breast. The bill was dark and clearly seen was the white forehead spot directly above the base of the bill.
