Observation details
Sitting on the cyclone fence on the north side of the road as I left Kincaid Park. Initially noted as it sallied from the fence and returned to its perch, pumping its tail vigorously after it landed. My first thought when I saw it from the car was Western Wood-Pewee, but when I saw the tail pumping I immediately recognized it as a phoebe. By the time I got out of the car it had disappeared. I tried playback and it immediately responded and vocalized repeatedly for about a minute with its harsh fee-bee call. It continued calling as it flew into the woods on the north side of the road (toward the airport) and then went silent and disappeared. Differentiated from Western Wood-Pewee by lack of crest, wing bars and by solidly black bill and vigorous tail pumping while perched. From Say’s Phoebe by vocalization and lack of ginger coloration on the underparts. A recording will be added when I return home in June.
