Observation details
Rare, irregular migrant. Found by Larry Lewis earlier in the day then observed by several birders through the day. Stayed mostly 100-200 yds away and observed through both binoculars and a 20x-60x scope. Adult female in alternate plumage. Rusty dark red on neck with white irregularly shaped area below the eye. Back dark. Underparts white. Bill medium size, pointed and dark. Bill was shorter than that of a Wilson's Phalarope and longer and thinner than a Red Phalarope. No yellow seen on bill. In flight, upperwing was dark with an obvious white wing stripe, underwing dusky white and brown. Behavior - most of the time it was feeding on the surface of the water and occasionally taking short flights that ended abruptly with a quick turn and landing on the water surface. 4-5 previous Spring Reports between 5/14 - 6/1.
