Observation details
Pair in the same general area where I encountered them earlier in the day. Nearly stepped on them. Male predominantly white aside for black retrices and lores (creating a black face mask). Bright vermillion fleshy(?) "eyebrows". A few dusky feathers on the crown and in the upperparts. Female was brownish-gold overall with more pronounced gold in the underparts. Frosty lores and crown (retained winter plumage?) White primaries visible. Silent. The rarer of the two Ptarmigans in the Barrow area, these two were contentedly picking at willows while we watched them from about 20-50 meters as they moved about foraging.
