Observation details
Continuing. White-bellied Asian ssp. of Barn Swallow. There are two Asian ssp. that reach Alaska: (i) gutturalis which has an incomplete breast band and (ii) rustica which has a solid breast band. Based on distribution, gutturalis is the more expected (in west and southwest AK) with rustica distributed to the north. Photos of this individual suggest a solid, dark breast band suggesting rustica? (The Nearctic form, erythrogaster, breeds in SE Alaska is eliminated due to cinnamon belly.) Observed feeding on the insects attracted to the kelp and seaweed, as well as perched on the ground. Silent.
