Observation details
An incredible experience! Found this bird partially submerged in the marsh, clinging to a bullrush for dear life. It was a cold morning with overnight rain, and steady drizzle continuing. I put it at the front of the kayak, where it clung to some bunjee cords. I paddled around for three hours completing my work before the temperature rose a few degrees (to about 12C). At this point the bird shuffled briefly, sat more upright, looked around a few times and launched itself off the front of the kayak. Over the following five minutes it foraged close by, making several, presumably grateful passes over my head to within a foot!
