Blue-footed Booby, in front of the left standing pelican, Port San Luis, San Luis Obispo County, California, 16 Sep 2013, Tom M. Edell
Observation details
Immature bird found perched on a 0.3 acre guano covered rock between the Port San Luis Pier and the breakwater by Tristan McKee. The bird was approximately 0.4 mile from our location on the pier. Comparable size to adjacent Brant's Cormorant with brown colored head, nape, back, and wings and white undersides; tail showed white at base and possibly in tail, but distance made it difficult to ascertain detail; stout, conical bill; legs and bill appeared grayish; wings appeared to cover most of the tail while standing unlike nearby cormorants. This bird had a much darker brown head and nape than the one I saw in Morro Bay yesterday. Distant digiscoped photo
