Sound Recording Workshop 2010
Join us for the 2010 Sound Recording Workshop!
Each year the Macaulay Library teaches state-of-the-art techniques for recording the sounds of wildlife with skilled staff from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participants learn through daily field recording sessions, coupled with lectures and demonstrations.
When: June 12 to June 19, 2010
Where: Tahoe National Forest, California
Workshop Fee: $945 (includes tuition, class materials, local transportation, food, and lodging)
Join us this year at San Francisco State University's Sierra Nevada Field Campus in the Tahoe National Forest. The station, located at 6,000 feet amid Ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, affords a wide range of recording conditions in spectacular surroundings.
Topics covered include:
- Selection and application of audio recorders and microphones
- Recording theory
- Metering
- Recording techniques
- Documentation for sound recordings
- Use of computer-based software to analyze recordings
Your instructors will be Greg Budney, Curator of the Macaulay Library; Bill McQuay, Audio Engineer for the Macaulay Library; and Randolph Little, Laboratory Associate with extensive recording experience.
Accommodations are rustic but comfortable. Lodging will be tents on platforms (mattresses are provided); the main lodge houses dining and bathing facilities.
Enrollment is primarily based on a first-come first-served basis, with first consideration given to students and researchers. A nonrefundable $100 deposit is requested to reserve a space. Participation is limited to 20, so enroll soon to be guaranteed a place.
Participants may register for two college credit hours through the San Francisco State University Biology Department. If interested, see Jim Steele at the field campus after you arrive. He will have a form for you to fill out and will take your payment at that time.
Workshop participants should bring their own recorder, microphone and headphones. If you need recording equipment, please contact the Library as soon as possible. A limited amount of equipment is available for loan.
